I barely ever had to use my turrets, I wish I set up a forward design for turrets because turrets are worth less than a pawn is. I found I built my base too close to my sea area since they would drop pod close to the beach anyways so it didn't matter. Use the plan tool under architect and orders to plan it out before you start building and build as close as possible to geothermal vents. Most of the time, the 1 tile pinch point hallway would clutter with corpses and create perfect choke points for all my colonists firing down the line.
